Paying Taxes

I finally finished gathering and calculating my business tax information this morning. My tax man tells me my profit margin was better than Exxon Mobil’s. Now, if I could only move the decimal point in my dollar amounts over to match theirs . . . But, making more money is not what is really on my mind today (well, not any more than usual). What I’m really thinking about is paying the taxes, which always brings about a certain four-letter word: Yuck!, as well as a certain three-word phrase: It’s not fair!

Which brings me to the FairTax. Have you heard of it? If you have, I hope you support it. If you don’t, or if you haven’t heard about it, you must learn more. The FairTax really is fair. They didn’t name it that just because it’s short and easy to remember and appeals to that sometimes childish desire that we all have inside of us, that life must be fair. Life will never be fair, but paying taxes can be.

I’m not going to get into an explanation of how the FairTax works. Instead, I’m going to refer you to the Americans for Fair Taxation: FairTax.org website (don’t miss their FAQ answer page) and to The FairTax Book by Neal Boortz & Congressman John Linder.

Before you make up your mind about the FairTax, make sure you have the facts. Once you do, tell everyone you know, especially your congressman. We need to get this fair tax show on the road.
